Problems with new Adobe Create Suite 2 Premium

I considered myself lucky when I received the CS2 Creative Suite Premium just before the weekend and really was looking forward to have a good look at all the fantastic new features.

Adobe CS 2 box

Unfortunately it seems like Adobe has been rushing this release for international PC users. I hit 3 severe problems right away and unfortunately the European Technical Support team at Adobe couldn’t help me out, before they had to leave for their weekend break.

One of the most central new features in Adobe CS 2 is the new file explorer like application called the Adobe Bridge.

For some reason, I cannot use the Bridge. When I start it from PhotoShop CS 2, I get a dialog box with the following message right after it becomes visible with the initial desktop view:

“Adobe bride cannot be used at this time because of licensing restrictions. You must have installed and launched at least one other Adobe application to use Adobe Bridge”

I have tried with more applications than PS running in the background before starting the bride to no avail. As soon as I hit OK, the bridge app aborts. Isn’t that just frustrating?

Automatic Update not working

I reported two additional problems related to automatic update not working. One in PhotoShop and one in Version Cue.

PhotoShop never ceased to present me with a dialog box claiming that update did not work and suggested I reinstalled the entire suite. Not something I felt like after just having spend a full hour installing with no apparent problems. The European Technical Support team in Netherland suggested I copied the updater directory from the localized path c:\program filer\fælles filer\adobe to c:\program filer\common files\adobe – and that took care of the PhotoShop update problem. Hmmm….

I am still waiting for a recommendation on automatic update for Version Cue.

What’s next

Last statement from Technical Support was that they would have to have a complete list of files from my system and that they realized this was probably sensitive information, so they would understand if I decided not to move on. I have nothing to hide on my PC, so I agreed to that and then I guess it became weekend in Holland, no further dialog.

Indesign CS2

I am watching the startup splash screen every time for more than 8 minuttes. Apparently the program is kept busy – I have the following message in the splash screen:

Initializing the SING gaiji system…

I really do not think this is a memory problem, because once it is up and running everything works fine. But I don’t think it’s normal to allow more than 8 minuttes for the Adobe InDesign CS2 program to start. Although I have already ordered more RAM, so I can upgrade my 512 MB to 2GB shortly, I am willing to bet that this is also due to a bug in the installation procedure.

Oh, and surprise – the update function does not work in this program either.

Beta version?

With the small fortune I have had to pay for this delivery, I really was not expecting to purchase a beta product. I sincerely hope the good folks at Adobe will move fast on this one. It must be pretty embarrasing to release that kind of buggy programs. I guess Europe is a small area on the American radar screen and may not represent a significant market…

  1. Status: My support tidket has been escalated from Adobe European Tech Support to level 3.

A lot of other people seem to have similar problems with the bridge according to the [Adobe Support Forum](http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html) but I have not see much the 8 minuttes InDesign CS startup time yet. I guess it’s still early days.

  2. There is hope. Looks like there is a godess at Adobe called Michelle Qi – she promised to send a new installer shortly. I’ll cross my fingers…

  3. Michelle is a star! The new Bridge installation works flawlessly and I can get started looking at all the new features, while I wait for a bugfix release on the update/startuptime problems.

  4. I’m having the precise same problems, but on one of my computers InDesign doesn’t start at all – it uses 99% of my CPU for about 30 minutes and the crashes. Bridges reports same error and Update in Photoshop and Version Cue doesn’t work either – I’m guessing this is why you shouldn’t rely on programs fresh from the oven but I couldn’t wait…

  5. Ditto to the ‘bridge problem’ although mine is as follows: easy install on MAC G5 under ‘Administrator’. Everything works fine, until log on as individual user (there are 2 of us) and Bridge cannot read file format (or something), and can only open two or three of the visible folders (all containing long standing and otherwise uncorrupted TIFF files).
Why does everything work when signed in as Admin, but not for either of the ‘users’? Bridge just shows a ‘blank’ folder when we attempt to open a file!
All the ‘permissions’ look fine and are set up as per previous CS install …. it appears to be just a problem with Bridge, this widely promoted and touted new and benificial centre piece of CS2. Perhaps Adobe could try to do their testing prior to sneding their product to market next year (or whenever CS3 comes along)….

  6. I’m having the precise same problem with bridge and update – but where can i find the new Bridge installation? Been looking @ Adobe’s site but i’ts not there.. Please help..

  7. Well i’m having the same problem and getting the “Adobe bride cannot be used at this time because of licensing restrictions. You must have installed and launched at least one other Adobe application to use Adobe Bridge” error when i try to lauch adobe brige, i’ve made some reading at the adobe support link posted in here, appearently an update for bridge is on it’s way, just wondering when it’ll be available for download, i’m really looking forward to see the new features in bridge and isn’t it strange it affects only danish windows xp versions?!

  8. My startup of InDesign CS2 stops at “Starting up Service Registry…”, and NOTHING happens. Anyone else got this problem? Or perhaps a solutions for this ???

  9. Just an update on my problem ticket with Adobe – well, nothing changed really. Today they replied and asked for more information on directory protection on the SING folders (there are 2 on a PC) and promised to keep me updated.

Let’s wait and see, for another month – I doubt that this is even on the radar screen at Adobe headquarters.

    **2GB memory did not help**
I upgraded the memory in my PC from 512MB to 2GB today with no effect on the InDesign CS2 startup time. It still takes full 8 minuttes. Nobody went for the bet though – so I didn’t win anyting on this one ;-)

  10. I downloaded and installed the Adobe Bridge 1.0.1 Update (Mac) very early this morning via Adobe Update…

It seems to open and run much faster…not sure what other issues may have been addressed.

  11. At last the adobe brigde seems to be working, adobe has made an update available (adobe bridge 1.0.1) for download, i just finished downloading it and all seems to be working at least i am able to launch bridge from photoshop and illustrator and bridge itself, there’s still the “updater” problem that have not been solved yet, adobe has probably posted the update on their website but i’m not sure.

I used the adobe updater located at (on my pc): C:\Programmer\Fælles filer\Adobe\Updater click “AdobeUpdater.exe” then it should find the update by itselv just download the file it’s about 38Mb.

What about the “update” function did anyone find a solution for this one?

  12. Installed CS2 Premium, registered the product. Then I realized I had a DOS icon for Adobe Acrobat. Double clicked and it said it wasn’t installed. Reinserted the cd, installed Acrobat, then it wanted to go through the activation process. Wouldn’t activate because the other products were activated and it thought I was pirating the product. Called Adobe Help Desk. Ruthy was stumped and had me call a tech support number that I had to PAY for! He told me to uninstall the whole product and reinstall. Uninstall took 189 minutes. Then tried to reinstall. Said Adobe Acrobat was already installed, but when I went to add remove programs in Windows, it says it is not installed. Called the Help Desk again. They tried again, couldn’t help. Told me I could PAY and call tech support again. I am now installing CS back on my machine. This is the worst upgrade Adobe has put out.

  13. So im guessing nobody knows how to get bridge to work. It was one of the raved about things in the reviews and when i try to use it it doesnt work. Im waiting for it to open as i speak (been waiting 10mins now!)

  14. My InDesign CS2 starts after about 28 minuts, even after I tryed a few tips:

Try trashing your prefs. Hold down shift+alt+ctrl keys immediately after launching the app. When asked if you want to delete your preferences, click yes.

It turns out there can be a problem with getting InDesign CS 2 to open if you also have Adobe Type Manager Deluxe 4.1 installed on your PC.

In order to get InDesign CS2 to open, try to uninstall and reinstall ATM.

Try deleting all files called adobefnt*.lst
This often solves problems with fonts. Make sure to include the * wildcard as you’ll probably have dozens of these. It is safe to delete them all. Indesign will rebuild them.

    I found this advise here:

    http://www.forum4designers.com/showthread.php?s=834e5997b4ff87396f5641218da34e52&threadid=230391&perpage=10&pagenumber=1

remark the tread is 4 pages long

  15. ##Finally – Indesign Slow startup workaround

Adobe Techical Support in Europe got back to me with a new approach to solve the unreal 8 minuttes startup time for Indesign CS2.

Why not move the entire folder to the desktop and try again – apparently they changed their mind and decided the *Gaiji SING system folder* was not a critical component after all.

And it worked. In fact, I have deleted the folder `c:\programmer\fælles filer\adobe\SING` from my computer and the improvement is significant.

  16. To get InDesign CS2 to work, and remove the “Starting up Service Registry…” problem – do the following:

    Start “AdobeUpdater.exe” from:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater\

Get all updates – about 45 MB. this will fix most of the problems.

  17. Hi

My danish version of InDesign CS2 was also a very slow, and nearly halted while loading the Sing Gaiji System, BUT thanks too Torbens advice abouth deleting the “SING” folder it looks fine now… By the way, it runs with 512 MB RAM. (AMD Athlon XP 3000+).

  18. Hi
I also having the same problem, Only with the Adobe Photoshop CS2.
when I try Adobeupdater I am still having problem about downloading the updates, It takes about 63 hours to download the updates.
My connection is 512 kpbs and it was only about 5 mb to download.

does anyone know or having the same problem?

  19. I had the same problem, but it is solved now.
I talked with Adobe, and the problem exist only with Danish OS versions !

You have to rename the SING folder to something else (like SING_OLD). This will do the trick until Adobe has permanent fix.

  20. I´ve had the same problem. Just delete the file C:\Programmer\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS2\Plug-Ins\Text\SING. This solves the issue

  21. Adobe CS 2 freezes
I have had a longlasting problem with several CS2 programs that freezes shortly after starting. If I open Indesign, and try to open or save anything, it freezes. The same problem occours with PhotoShop and Illustrator, and even GoLive.

Adobe seems to have no answer to this problem. I wonder if any on this site have had this issue, and a possible solution.

I have tryed several things, inlucing reinstall of the package, turning off all startup drivers in Windows, without any luck.

  22. Solution to Adobe Updater (Photoshop CS2) not starting under Danish OS (XP) – prior to installation, alter common program files folder (standard in Danish XP: C:\Programmer\Fælles Filer) – the problem is “æ” in “Fælles” – thus change it to e.g “…\Faelles” or whatever you prefer, using only letters available in English. Install & enjoy.

The directory change affects only future installs – prior programs should work.

The common program files directory may be changed directly via regedit – alternatively use Microsofts Tweak UI.

  23. Thank ya’all for gooood advice! :-) – – Finally something’s working – – removing the SING folder, is doing magic in cs3 InDesign too…

  24. About the SING gaiji systemand too long startuptime…

I unmarked the SING gaiji system (SING.APLN) under [Configure plug-ins…] and now I get started with my work right away :-)

  26. Professional photo restoration can be an expensive proposition, depending on the amount of wear and tear. Even if you decide to have it professionally reconditioned you may be a bit apprehensive about handing over your valued memories to a virtual stranger.^
